Periodontics Q & A

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty focusing on gum disease, the inflammatory condition that ruins the gums and other supporting bone and tissue around teeth. Many periodontal treatments for gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis are handled by a general dentist. A periodontist usually handles more severe cases or works with patients with complex medical issues.

Are there different types of gum disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection caused by plaque buildup. If left untreated, it will turn into a severe, irreversible condition that will make you lose your teeth, or your teeth will be so diseased that Dr. Nassiri will need to extract them. There are three main categories of gum disease that range in progression from mild to severe conditions.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. Symptoms include inflammation of the gums at the gumline, as well as bleeding when you brush your teeth, and gum tenderness. With proper treatment gingivitis is reversible.

Periodontitis

During periodontitis, pockets form where your teeth and gums meet. Symptoms include more severe pain, puffy, swollen gums, and loose teeth. Your gums will also bleed easily as the infection continues. At this point, some damage may be irreversible. Making an appointment with Dr. Nassiri as soon as possible is very important.

Advanced periodontitis

This is the most severe stage of gum disease. At this point, all damage is irreversible as the connective tissue and bone securing your teeth are destroyed. Your teeth may have shifted or have loosened to the point that Dr. Nassiri may need to extract them.

How is gum disease treated?

The good news about gum disease is that it is highly treatable if caught early in stages one and two. There are a variety of nonsurgical and surgical ways to treat or mitigate the damage created by gum disease. Dr. Nassiri recommends a treatment plan based on an evaluation of your current condition and how much irreversible damage there is.

Some of the treatments for gum disease include:

  • Scaling to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and from the pocket area
  • Root planing to remove plaque and tartar from the roots of your teeth
  • Antibiotics such as topical or oral antibiotics to control infection
  • Surgical options for severe cases, such as bone and tissue grafts

Dr. Nassiri can discuss with you the proper treatment you may need for any gum disease issues.
